Story:
“In the summer of 2024, I found myself working as a chef at a remote fly-in hunting camp, surrounded by Alaska’s wild beauty. On a rare day off, two hunting guides I’d become friends with suggested we go rock climbing and fishing. After scaling some routes along the Seward Highway, we headed to Whittier—a seaport town steeped in military history and home to countless salmon rivers.
By the time we found a sheltered picnic area by the inlet, the rain was coming down hard. We fired up the grill, eager for a hot meal, but just as the steaks were sizzling, a young black bear emerged from the bushes, only five yards away. Close enough to hear our heartbeats, the bear eyed us curiously. Shoulder to shoulder, the three of us shouted, eventually sending him scampering off. Later, as dusk settled in, I wandered along the riverbank and spotted our guest once again. This time, he was fishing peacefully, intent on his own dinner—a quiet, humbling reminder of the simple balance of life out here in Alaska.”
