Story:
“The morning after completing a grueling off-trail trek through the Earnslaw Burn Valley in the southern region of Mt. Aspiring National Park, my friend and I stumbled upon this almost mystical view. We were battered and bruised from the previous day—a brutal journey that began on a marked trail winding into the valley, where we camped beneath sheer granite walls, cascading waterfalls, and hanging glaciers.
While most hikers would have retraced their steps to the car park, we chose the adventurous route, scaling a steep 3,500-foot scree chute to gain the ridge. From there, we navigated westward, the descent turning into a race against nightfall. Darkness swallowed us as we scrambled across cliffs and boulder fields, but nothing compared to the final obstacle: a harrowing 3,000-foot descent down a 45-degree grassy slope riddled with ruts and holes that threatened to twist ankles at every step. By the time we reached the car, my knees were bruised, and collapsing into my sleeping bag was a long-overdue relief.
At dawn, still aching but eager for what lay ahead, we drove toward Queenstown. A stop in Glenorchy for sunrise rewarded us with a breathtaking scene: a solitary boat resting on still waters, framed by mountains and a valley cloaked in a dreamy inversion of clouds. This photo, 'The Solstice 1 of 2,' captures the quiet magic moments before the sun crested the peaks, while 'The Solstice 2 of 2' captures the alpenglow igniting the mountain tips.”
