Story:
“Once an ancient lakebed, the Bonneville Salt Flats have transformed over thousands of years into a vast, shimmering expanse of pure flat white salt stretching endlessly beneath the sky. This otherworldly landscape, etched by time and untouched by borders, became a proving ground for speed and endurance thrill seekers for generations looking to break the land speed records.
In my road trip across the western US in 2019, I was allured to promise land of speed coming from Idaho. We filled up at the gas station on the border of the salt flats and asked the cashier for advice about driving on the flats. She warned us, “don’t get stuck in the mud or run out of gas, there is no cell service, and you will die.” Taking the message to heart we entered the salts and my friend was driving. What she did not warn us about is occasionally there are small two-to-three-foot mounds that are almost indistinguishable from the horizon. My friend’s car was redlining at 95 mph when he hit one of the mounds and we got some air time. The entire front end was bent and mangled. We had to limp the car at 25mph to Salt Lake City which was 120 miles away purchase the parts and tools to repair the vehicle. We did the surgery in an AutoZone parking lot, returned the tools and we were on our way.”
