Fire on the Mountain

Story:

“It had been a long day in the backcountry. We broke camp at sunrise and, over the course of the day, climbed and scrambled over 7,600 vertical feet (2,300 meters) to reach the summit of Mount Tyndall. Three-quarters of the way up, we’d stashed most of our gear, planning to camp there on our descent. With our packs lightened, we pressed on, tackling the final obstacle—a sharp, precarious ridge covered in loose shale.

As we descended to our new camp, the sun began to set, casting a fiery glow across the landscape. I turned back to see how far we’d come and stood, transfixed, at the scene across the valley. The sky was painted in shifting hues of red, and the hillside’s autumn colors gave the mountains an otherworldly, blazing intensity. I reached for my telephoto lens to capture this surreal composition, a perfect end to an unforgettable day in the high country.”
