Story:
“Witnessing sunset and sunrise occurring simultaneously at 1:00 am bends the mind. I was leading a 14-day backpacking expedition in the mountains in the Arctic in the middle of July. The weather up there is unpredictable, we had not seen the sunset, sunrise, or any sign of civilization for the 13 days we had been out there. After two clients were evacuated on day nine, only three remained with me, waiting at our remote pickup point where a float plane from a town 115 miles away would come and pick us up. Since we did not have to move in the morning, we hung out late into the night in the cook tent.
At midnight, everyone else had gone to bed, and I was left alone, packing up the cook tent. When I stood up from the tent, I was struck with true awe - to my immediate right, the mountain in this picture glowed with the red sunset. I panned 180 degrees and saw the cool blue glow of sunrise begin to touch the mountains on the far side of the valley. I couldn’t even begin to comprehend the painting of impossible colors and scale that was unfolding before me. I sat in the soft tundra, panning my head from right to left until I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer at 3:27 am. It was all silent, except for the chirping picas and the occasional mosquito buzzing in my ear.”
